The Copper Harbor Trails have been listed in the March issue of Bike Magazine as one of "North America's Best Destinations" because "if you're seeking outstanding trails Copper Harbor is worth the drive. If you're from the Midwest, riding Copper Harbor is a whole new experience".

Recommended stops in Copper Harbor include the Pines Resort for breakfast and the Mariner North for lunch. The Keweenaw Adventure Company is the bike shop of choice.

Gost Towns" that offers travelers " the opportunity to see the past as it's relected in quaint homes and churches, overgrown cemeteries, and the occasional historical museum".

Especially "worth a drive" are Mandan, Phoenix, Central, White City and the Laurium Manor Inn with "its silver-leaf celing, triple gran d staircase and 1,300 square foot dining room".

Readers of Lake Superior Magazine have voted the Keweenaw Peninsula #5 in the Top 10 Lake Superior Destinations in the 2010 Annual Lake Superior Travel Guide while Copper Harbor was tied for #2.

The Portage Lift Bridge, Quincy Hill Overlook, the Calumet Theatre, Copper Harbor, Ft. Wilkins State Park, Isle Royale and Brockway Mountain are all listed as Must Sees.

Brockway Mountain Drive was listed as one of the Best Birding sites on Lake Superior and the Delaware Copper Mine, Quincy Underground Mine and the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum were listed as favorites under Rock Picking.

Both the Flint Journal (12-13-09) and the Chicago Tribune (12/16/09) have reported on the Associated Press story about the new CopperDog 150 sled dog races in an article about "sled-dog races go from dream to reality: three new events in Michigan for 2010".

The Copper Dog 150, scheduled for March 12-14, 2009, will begin in Calumet and run through 150 miles of beautiful Keweenaw snow, with stops in Gay and Copper Harbor

Cross Country Skier

On December 12, 2009 the online version of Cross Country Skier reported on the fact that the   Keweenaw Mountain Lodge will be open during the winter for the first time  in its 75 year history.

The Lodge, located just south of Copper Harbor, MI on US-41, will be open 7 days a week, starting in December, with cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sleeding, a tobaggon run, an ice rink and snowboard terrain park.

Board openings are filled on an annual basis. After requesting nominations from the KCVB membership, ballots are mailed to all members.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking nominations for 3 seats on its Board of Directors that will be expiring December 31, 2009.  The seats are currently held by Bill Leonard, The Einerlei, Mark Maroste, Budget Host Inn and Dave Sprenger, Laurium Manor Inn.

These seats should be filled by someone involved in local tourism either through a business or organization that is a member of the KCVB.

The Board meets on a monthly basis.  Board members are assigned to at least one committee and should expect to spend 1 to 4 hours a month working on committee assignments.

Keweenaw Trails Service, Inc. is holding a trail work session this weekend to sign and brush on the local snowmobile trails.  The event will run from 9 am to ? on Friday, October 23 and 9 am to ? on Saturday, October 24.  Meet at the Lac La Belle Lodge in Lac La Belle.

Sack lunches will be provided to volunteers on both days by the Pines Resort in Copper Harbor and the Lac La Belle Lodge's Bear Belly Bar & Grill will provide a free dinner to all volunteers on Saturday evening.  Free lodging is being offered at both businesses for out of town participants Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and volunteer and help support snomobiling in the Keweenaw.

IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) Trail News Fall 2009 lists the Copper Harbor Trails second in its list of "2009 Epic Rides" citing its "..superb, scenic views above Lake Superior" and ..."extensive singletrack, linked by cedar-planked bridges and boardwalks...through old growth forests."

Copper Harbor was listed among such illustrious locations as Seneca, West Virginia; northern Georgia; Cheyenne, Wyoming and Mount St. Helens, Washington.

Free Website Listings for Houghton/Keweenaw Tourism Businesses Calumet, MI---The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau (KCVB) announces a new program that includes a free listing for all tourism related businesses in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. “Our website www.keweenaw.info will be as inclusive as we can make it,” according to Julie Waara, membership chairperson and Dave Sprenger, website chairperson.  “Potential visitors expect as much information as possible when visiting the Keweenaw’s tourism website.  The more that we show on our website the more likely people are to visit our area,” says Waara.  “We want every attraction, store, gas station, restaurant, event, etc….basically everything a tourist would be interested in to be on the website,” said Sprenger. The new levels are as follows: Free level includes website listing with name, address and phone number.  This level is not available to lodging facilities. Advertiser level includes website listing with photo and link, and color Adventure Guide listing, office referrals, and brochures can be displayed at KCVB office.  This level is not available to lodging facilities. Ellen Creager, Free Press Travel writer, spent time on Isle Royale National Park and learned "you don't have to be a hard-core backpacker to enjoy Isle Royale".

Creager spent time exploring the island on day hikes, attending park ranger talks and doing an evening cruise that ended with her discussion with Rolf Peterson, the Michigan Tech research professor who has spend 50 years studying the island's wolf-moose population.

On Tuesday, July 14, the Weather Channel traveled to the Keweenaw Peninsula as part of their Why I Love Summer week. One of their Top 10 Summer Destinations in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is the Keweenaw Peninsula. They visited the Quincy Mine , the Copper Harbor Lighthouse via the Lighthouse Boat Tours and traveled to several Keweenaw waterfalls.

Isle Royale was also listed as one of their Top 10 Lakeside Retreats in Lake Superior.

Michigan History, for the May/June 2009 issue, "sat down with State of Michigan Archaeologist John R. Halsey to discuss what he has learned about miners who explored and developed the Copper Country in the mid-nineteenth century."

The article contains a wealth of information on the prehistoric peoples who mined the wealth of the Copper Country and those who found and explored their sites.

In the May 2009 issue of Silent Sports, Leo Borowski recounts his trip to the Copper Harbor trails for the Copper Harbor Fat Tire Festival and "a mountain biking experience rarely seen this side of the Rockies." Video footage of several of the areas of the trail system that he rode are available at Keweenaw Adventure Company's website.

Borowski is a past USSA Nordic Coach of the Year and Badger State Winter Games Athlete of the Year. In the June issue of Silent Sports he "will look at future plans for the Copper Harbor mountain bike system, which include trail climbing to the top of Brockway Mountain, more intermediate-level singletrack, some black diamond free-ride trails and a 27-mile epic trail."

"High-quality brewing is not just the the Keweenaw's past" as shown by the three local breweries featured in the article: Michigan House Cafe & Brew Pub of Calumet, Keweenaw Brewing Company of Houghton & South Range (the only microbrewery in the Upper Peninsula) and Library Restaurant & Brew Pub of Houghton. The three highlighted breweries of the Keweenaw are among only 7 in operation in the Upper Peninsula.

Modern Dance in Copper Country: Peter Sparling's Peninsula is a Living Travelogue Crowned With Copper", a Marketwire release from New York, NY on April 8, 2009, is a review of a work by a University of Michigan tenured professor of dance that premiered at the 2004 Ann Arbor Summer Festival. Writing for the Travel Section of Journal & Topics Newspapers, Susan Bayer Ward traveled to Isle Royale National Park for the first time to see ..."where it was" and 'what it entailed.."

After traveling to the island from Copper Harbor aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV , she explored the "pristine northwoods paradise" and all it has to offer. According to Superintendet Phyllis Green, Isle Royale is the least visited national park in terms of numbers, but it boasts the most repeat visitors.

Fara Warner, "Trekking through history in the Upper Peninsula, one day at a time" for the National Park Foundation, spent a "Long Weekend: Up in Michigan". She spent a day visiting the Keweenaw National Historical Park and several of its Heritage Sites including the Quincy Mine , the Calumet Theatre and the Laurium Manor Inn . On day two of her trip, she took the Isle Royale Queen IV to visit Isle Royale National Park and recommends breakfast beforehand at the The Pines in Copper Harbor.

Readers of Lake Superior Magazine have voted the Keweenaw Peninsula #3 in the Top 10 Lake Superior Destinations in the 2009 Annual Lake Superior Travel Guide.

Brockway Mountain Drive was listed as one of the Best Birding sites on Lake Superior and the Delaware Copper Mine, Quincy Underground Mine and the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum were listed under favorite rock picking sites and rock experts.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking nominations for 4 seats on its Board of Directors that will be expiring on December 31, 2008. The seats, 2 Keweenaw Room Assessment District and 2 at large, are currently held by Mary Probst, Eagle Harbor Inn; Troy Westcott, Lac La Belle Lodge; Nick Sirdenis, Mt. Ripley; and Bob Grasseschi, Quincy's Restaurant.

Nominees should be advised that 2 of the 4 seats must be filled by hotel owners/managers participating in the collection of room assessments, as stated in the KCVB by-laws. The other two seats should be filled by someone involved in local tourism either through a business or organization that is a member of the KCVB.

The Board meets on a monthly basis. Board members are assigned to at least one committee and should expect to spend 1 to 4 hours a month working on committee assignments.

Ron Bergin of Cross Country Skier magazine profiles the Chassell Trail, a single track classical trail, in his "Hidden Gems: The Keweenaw's Hidden Gem The Chassell Trail and "local Nordic skiing aficionado Jim Tervo"'s dedication to the Chassell trail system and to the local Nordic skiing scene.

Tervo has been working on the Chassell Trail over 25 years and does 90% of the grooming, usually rising at 4:30 am to have it done by 6:30 am.

The trail is a "mix of hardwood forest, short stretches of open field and conifer-lined tunnels" and is a "trail you could ski just about every day without growing tired of it."

In the April 20 issue of the Chicago Sun-Times, writer and sometime marathon runner Felicia Schneiderhan recounts her experiences during the Keweenaw Trail Run in an article entitled "Keweenaw Trail, Mich.: A run through the woods/Annual Keweenaw Trail Running Festival in Michigan takes athletes off the beaten path".

"In the world of 5Ks and 10Ks every other day, the Keweenaw Trail Running Festival is a unique alternative" and attracts "about 300 runners" from "Oregon to Vermont".

The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge just south of Copper Harbor is race central for two days of races that test speed, strength and endurance.

John Flesher, Associated Press writer, shares several days in the life of the ongoing wolf/moose study on Isle Royale in an article entitled, Watching wolves, moose and the heat.

Isle Royale, an island national park in Lake Superior, is the site of "one of the world's longest studies of a predator and its primary prey" that has been in place for five decades and is "a gold standard for documenting symbiotic relationships between predator and prey species and their natural surroundings". The study has also begun to research the effects of global warming on the wolf/moose population.

The article has been reprinted in such diverse newspapers as the International Herald Tribune in France and The South African Star in South Africa.

In "Spotted: Another rare bird sighting in Keweenaw" in the April 14 issue of the Daily Mining Gazette, writer Dan Schneider talks with photographer Mike Shupe and local birding enthusiast Joe Kaplan about the appearance of a Louisiana Waterthrush in Copper Harbor and a Boreal Owl in Hancock during the 2008 birding season on the Keweenaw. According to Kaplan, the arrival of the Waterthrush "brings the total number of bird species recorded in the Keweenaw to 322."

The annual Hawk Watch over Brockway Mountain and the bird migration on the Keweenaw usually runs from mid-April through the end of May, with peak viewing time around the middle of May. Local and visiting birding enthusiasts gather in Copper Harbor in early May for Migratory Bird Day .

There were 33,127 miles groomed during the 2007-08 season (that's 4,444 hours) as compared to 21,267 miles the previous year. In an article entitled "When Beaders Unite: Keweenaw Inspirations" in the February/March 2008 issue, Diane Fitzgerald of Beadwork Magazine highlights the group beadwork project done in 2006 by the Copper Country Community Arts Council to raise money for the Arts Center and awareness and appreciation for beadwork as fine art. Twenty artists participated to create Interpretations of the Keweenaw which were then raffled off in conjunction with the 4th biennial Northern Bead Symposium.

Free Press Columnist Susan Ager recounts "A cold night with the marshmallow man", her experience with one group of statue builders during the Winter Carnival 2008 All-Nighter competition. About half of the snow sculptures built by the Michigan Tech students for the Winter Carnival "are elaborate achievements, pieced together over the course of a month". The other half, the All-Nighters, are done by groups who "stay up as late as they can to create the snow sculptures that draw thousands of visitors" to the City of Houghton and Michigan Tech University campus.

In Issue 6 January/February 2008 Underwater Journal, in an article entitled "Superior Wrecks", James Lima recounts his dive visit to the Canadian Steamer Wreck Wasaga near Copper Harbor...."an easy dive from the charter boat 'Equinox'"and .....a smorgasbord of artifacts associated with the vessel and that of her cargo".

The "Wasaga" is just one of the many historic shipwrecks located in the 103 square mile Keweenaw Underwater Preserve that are marked for diving from mid-June to mid-Setpember.

Owners and managers from the Mariner North and Pines Resort in Copper Harbor and the AmericInn in Calumet agree that the upcoming snowmobile season has gotten off to a great start with snowfall having already reached 80.5 inches and an additional trail groomer that allows Keweenaw Trails Services to "....hit the heavier-used trails more often."

In the article "Groomers get earliest start in more than a decade", Daily Mining Gazette writer Dan Schneider reports that the Keweenaw Trails Services trail groomers were out on the opening day of the 2007-2008 season. This was the "...first time in more than a decade that groomers had enough snow to groom on the DNR-designated first day of snowmobile season." The snow was so heavy in some areas that "...we would have buried the groomers if we didn't get in there and do it on time."

On the September 27 edition of the Today Show on NBC, travel editor Peter Greenberg shared his 8 great and unusual fall foliage destinations for "taking in the seasons beautiful hues". His first pick? The Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including Copper Harbor's Brockway Mountain Drive which "offers breathtaking views and a 9 1/2-mile drive with views of Lake Superior and the thousands of acres of the Keweenaw".

For those with plenty of time,.."dig in for an extended tour of the Keweenaw region which could include not only copper history but dazzling natural scenery and outdoor sports such as boating, fishing and mountain biking". Those with limited time should hit the "heart of the Keweenaw park: the Calumet and Quincy units" for the "aura of yesteryear" in downtown Calumet and the "hands-on experience" of the Quincy unit.

New York Times writer Stephen Regenold reports on the three days he and his family spent in the Keweenaw..."where translucent-blue water washes arching shores."

Their trip included the requisite Copper Country circuit - the Quincy Mine , museums, gift shops, Keweenaw National Historical Park Heritage Sites and of course, a pasty. Time was also spent "hiking and beach-walking on stretches of sandy shore and mossy woodland trails" and...."exploring the main streets of Calumet, Houghton and Hancock".

Keweenaw Trails Services reports that 2,586 miles were groomed in March, 2007.  This compares to 8,920 in March, 2006. There were 21,267 miles groomed during the 2006-07 season (3,383.5 hours of grooming!), as compared to 35,062 miles the previous year, due to a late start to the season, and an early end. During the season our fleet of 5 New Holland groomers are busy daily on the 233 miles of trails between Toivola and the tip of the Keweenaw. The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau is a major supporter of Keweenaw Trails Services and has contributed $80,000 this year to their operations.

Bohemia the "extreme expert" ski hill located at Lac La Belle on the Keweenaw Peninsula "that caters to a specific and underserved market of skiers looking for adventure."
