This was the sight of a disaster on Christmas Eve, 1913. Seventy-three people, over half of whom were children, suffocated while attempting to escape from a false-fire alarm during a bitter strike that idled 15,000 workers in the Copper Country. This park is dedicated to the memory of those who perished here.

Currently under restoration, the church was constructed in 1898 to serve an immigrant population that had come to work in the region's copper mines.
