Reading the Landscape

July 12, 2008
Central

Reading the Landscape of the Keweenaw Summer 2008 Changes in the Land presents  "Shifting Sands--examining the unnatural and natural history of stamp sands" from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 12. Meet at the Visitor Center at Central - 18 miles north of Calumet just off US-41.

Visit the historic Central mine site with artist Linden Dahlstrom, Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District board member Gina Nicholas and remediation experts from the Stamp Sand Stabilization Project to discover what effect the mining which took place over a centry ago still has on land and waters there. Begin the tour with an introduction by a Keweenaw County Historical Social representative to the human history at Central. Then find out how mining has impacted this watershed and what the mitigation plan is for returning some of the area to a more natural state.

The Reading the Landscape of the Keweenaw series are Art & Natural History Field Trips for Adults. Registration and advanced payment are required and session size is limited. Bring a bag lunch and water and your own journal for writing and art. Most sessions involve a hike. For more information see the website or call 906-482-0820.
