Festival Joie de Vivre

August 28 to 31, 2008
Chassell

Joie de Vivre, a joyful, carefree enjoyment of life, will be the focus of the French-Canadian festival scheduled for August 28 through August 31 in Chassell. This brand new event, sponsored by the Chassell Historical Organization, will celebrate the area's French Canadian heritage and raise funds for the Chassell Heritage Center's handicapped access project. The event will feature traditional music, song, dance, and foods of French Canada, workshops on genealogy, music and dance, and other surprises centered around French-Canadian cultural traditions. And remember, Joie de Vivre" is not just for the French....it promises to be a fun time for all.

On August 28 there will be a Keweenaw National Historical Park 4th Thursday in History at the Chassell Heritage Center. The Friends of Fashion, a vintage clothing museum group, will present a fashion show highlighting the lives of French Canadian immigrants to the Copper Country and Chassell, in particular. The narrative will include references to the culture, celebrations, and customs of the French Canadian settlers. The show will be enhanced with a power-point projection of vintage photos. The evening will also include music and dance by the local Maple Sugar Folk folk music group and delectable French Canadian desserts.

On Friday, August 29 there will be registration at the Chassell Heritage Center throughout the day, exhibits, documentaries, guided trolley bus tours and a reception for the Quebecois band, De Temp Antans, at the VFW Hall in downtown Chassell. The band will perform for an hour and there will be food available for purchase and a cash bar.

Saturday, August 30 includes registration opening at 9 am and workshops beginning at 10 am. Adventure Day at Centennial Park will include log rolling, biking, skating & kayaking demos. Traditions alive will supervise children's games by local youth dressed in period costume. Local musicians are invited to take advantage of the open mic throughout the day. A favorite traditional French Canadian food, pea soup, will be available for lunch. A Saturday Evening Soiree will be held at the park pavillion, featuring the Quebec band De Temp Antan, with great traditional French music and dance. There will be favorite traditional French Canadian foods, including Pork Pie and Sugar Tarts available for purchase. On Sunday, August 31 worshipers will convene at the Shrine in downtown Chassell at 8:45 am and then proceed to a 9 am Mass at St. Anne's Catholic Church.
