Biking

The Keweenaw offers some of the most unique riding in the state. For the mountain biker the rocky and rugged terrain of the peninsula offers scenic vistas, wooded single tracks, dramatic uphills and downhills, and DNR rail-trails. Road bikers will find excellent roads, incredible scenery and light traffic.

Birding

The Audubon Society has reported 321 species of birds on the Keweenaw! Bring your binoculars during the Hawk Migration in May or visit one of the many sanctuaries throughout the peninsula for a glimpse of their many nesters and visitors.

Canoeing/Kayaking

The Keweenaw Water Trail, inland lakes, quiet harbors - rugged Lake Superior shoreline, unique geology, awesome scenery - all await your paddle.

Fishing

Hiking

Put on those comfortable boots and walk through an old-growth boreal forest, get your heart pumping on a hike up Mt. Baldy, stroll along the Keweenaw shoreline or follow a tour map of one of the many historic districts - every age and ability can experience the wonders of the Keweenaw.

Rockhounding

The Keweenaw Peninsula's unique Pre-Cambrian geological formations make it a motherlode for rock-hunters, both amateur and professional.

Scuba diving

Dive the 103 square mile Keweenaw Underwater Preserve that contains a variety of historic shipwrecks and the Coast Guard Cutter Mesquite.

History

The history and heritage of the Keweenaw go back to the 1840s and beyond. Mining history, rich ethnic heritage, historic architecture - all combine to make the Keweenaw a history buffs dream.

Ghost Towns

The Keweenaw once had a population of close to 100,000 people in thriving communities from Houghton to Copper Harbor. Locations from Winona to Mandan offer a brief glimpse into the past.

Historic Cemeteries

Ethnic diversity and mining history are chiseled on gravestones, many in the original European languages. Ornate marble columns stand next to plain wooden markers.

Keweenaw National Historical Park

The Keweenaw National Historical Park preserves and interprets the natural and cultural resources relating to the Keweenaw's copper mining history.

Lighthouses

Among the most interesting structures on the Keweenaw Peninsula are the lighthouses. They were an important factor in transporting the mineral resources of the copper district. The "10 lights of the Keweenaw" offer a unique look into Keweenaw's maritime history.

Museums

The Calumet Opera House, the Quincy Mine, Laurium Manor Mansion Tour, Ft. Wilkins State Historic Site, Norwegian Lutheran Church - these and many more museums and historic sites are scattered throughout the peninsula and each has its own story to tell.

Bridge Cam from pasty.com Bridge Cam

View a current picture of the Portage Canal Lift Bridge, which connects Houghton and Hancock, Michigan. This bridge provides the only road to the portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula that lies north of Portage Lake. The Bridge Cam points southeast from Hancock and also shows a portion of the Houghton waterfront across the canal.
